Mission Statement

I am a Computer Science major at University of Texas at Tyler and I believe that the field of developing technology is one of the, if not the, fastest growing area in terms of demand. As a computer programmer, one would write code for anything from building a website to enhancing a security system. The world we live in is sinking further into a technology dependent society with even out coffee makers being programmable to make a cup of joe at a certain time and because of this, tech-based companies are on the rise from Elon Musk’s “The Boring Company”, who’s most notable goal is eliminating traffic in cities using underground tunnels with shuttles on tracks to commute around the city, to Jeff Bezos’ “Amazon”, which has revolutionized shopping via the internet. Computer scientists have revolutionized the world in such a drastic way that most people can not go a day without using some item that had to be coded perfectly and intricately, by the programmers, in order to function so that the everyday, average person could use it. During my research, I found that the reach of computer science was broader than I thought. I also found out that I had much to learn as I tried to decipher texts written by experts in my field of study. But, during my research, I began looking into the development and implication of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) more and found myself rather intrigued. A.I is essentially a sentient computer that learns from its mistakes and does so at an extremely fast pace. For example, Elon Musk’s team created an A.I. to play DOTA 2, and their A.I. was able to beat the number one ranked player in the world. I have decided because of this interest to shift my focus towards an education revolving around A.I. development courses.

On this website there are two tabs, one labeled “Computer Science in Society” which discusses the impact that the advancement of technology has had on the world and the possibilities that lie ahead with the technology that is currently being crafted by today’s programmers while the other, “Computer Science in the Economy”, discusses the job market and the growth of the economy sparked by the technological revolution and discusses the myth that technology is destroying jobs in the economy. The goal of a computer scientist, at least to me, is to make life easier for everyone through the use of ever-expanding technology and automation of tasks that can be considered “wastes of time” when technology can do it for you, and they should strive to enhance growth amongst their peers and their society.
